<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We often struggle with Secret Sisters... Last year we came up with a new idea. We believe it was an answer to our prayers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1) Before camp every YW and leader buys or makes FIVE items that represent things they love. For example. I love to crochet, so I made a little headband. I love chocolate, so I purchased one of my favorite candy bars... etc.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2) Before camp every YW decorates a <a href="http://amzn.to/1r9WhRK" target="_blank">small rock</a> with their name on it - you could skip this step and just have <a href="http://amzn.to/1r9WhRK" target="_blank">small rocks</a> with names that a leader has written on with a <a href="http://amzn.to/1Y3sHdy" target="_blank">paint pen</a> or something.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3) Every morning you gather all the rocks into a bag and pass them around - if you get your own name or someone you've had before during the week - put it back.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4) Whatever name you have that day, that is your secret sister. You serve them, pray for them, etc. At campfire that evening we go around and each person announces who they have that day. They give them one of the items that they purchased and tell them why they love it and that they hope their secret sister loves it, too. This is a great way to get to know one another better and keeps the gifts a lot more evenly spread out. WE LOVE IT!!! We hope you do, too!</div>

Good Works Value Experience #6
<br />
<br />
"Spend at least three hours giving service outside your family. Ask your ward or branch Relief Society president or a community leader for suggestions for service. For example, you might take care of children while parents attend the temple; collect, make, or recondition toys or games for a nursery; accept an assignment to clean the meetinghouse; or perform errands for or read to a homebound person or others in need. Record in your journal the reactions of the person you served and possible goals for future service opportunities."

The YW love a good spa night - especially if they get to invite their Moms! Here are a few ideas from ours:<br />
<br />
1) DEVOTIONAL - on <a href="https://www.lds.org/youth/video/deep-beauty?lang=eng" target="_blank">what true beauty is</a>.<br />
<br />
2) NAIL STATION - mothers and daughters give one another manicures (hand scrub recipe: 1 cup coarse sea salt, 1/2 cup liquid coconut oil, 6 drops of essential oil for scent), including painting one another's nails.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3) MAKEUP STATION - We brought some inexpensive cosmetics (new for hygiene reasons) and disposable applicators and one of the leaders demonstrated on a YW the proper way to apply makeup and then mothers/daughters did makeovers.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4) CRAYOLA LIPSTICK CRAFT - Recipe: 1/2 teaspoon of <a href="http://amzn.to/1Rf1527" target="_blank">coconut oil</a>, 1 crayon (soak wrapper for a few minutes to easily peel off) broken into 3-4 pieces (or combine 1/2 each of 2 crayons) and 1/4 teaspoon vegetable oil (or <a href="http://amzn.to/1XB70hC" target="_blank">essential oil</a> if you want them scented) for gloss and easier spreadability). We put a frying pan on the stove with 1-2" water and brought to a simmer. Our frying pan held 4 <a href="http://amzn.to/1Rf1bXv" target="_blank">ramekins</a> so 4 YW could go at a time. YW prepared their ramekins with the oils/crayons and put them in the frying pan (in the ramekin so it's a makeshift double boiler). Stir with skewers (we had <a href="http://amzn.to/1V826Nb" target="_blank">tiny plastic spoons</a> that we used to measure the oils and to stir with). Then use <a href="http://amzn.to/1Rf1hhM" target="_blank">pipettes</a> to put hot lipsticks into <a href="http://amzn.to/1Rf1gdP" target="_blank">lipstick containers</a>. *We really only ended up purchasing pipettes and lipstick containers because we had everything else! There are many youtube videos on how to make the crayola lipsticks.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5) HAIR STATION - We downloaded several videos from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/CuteGirlsHairstyles" target="_blank">Cute Girls Hairstyles</a> and one of our YW manned a station where the YW and mothers could watch the videos and do one another's hair. Be sure to download the videos, because most churches block YouTube over the wifi (unless you're using a cell device, obviously).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
6) REFRESHMENTS<b> </b>- We purchased <a href="http://amzn.to/1Rf1otW" target="_blank">nut cups</a> and peanuts and <a href="http://amzn.to/1Rf1jq4" target="_blank">chocolate covered fruit</a>. We made little cups of nuts and little cups of the chocolate covered fruits and put little circle labels on them (see printable below). We also had little water bottles with labels (see printable below).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl26E_APpCvRtEgZJkki7kwHurjxFR0mIqdzAiq5sXMGbEVvb3S5QELUnRAkqjP7Aham0-o24EbmC6WH4NOwHY9U6JyJxQVYqOVHs1tqCAoxnhsD6zYgiMX78Q5JAQ1_gVnMxgeUZbkkA/s1600/circlelabel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl26E_APpCvRtEgZJkki7kwHurjxFR0mIqdzAiq5sXMGbEVvb3S5QELUnRAkqjP7Aham0-o24EbmC6WH4NOwHY9U6JyJxQVYqOVHs1tqCAoxnhsD6zYgiMX78Q5JAQ1_gVnMxgeUZbkkA/s1600/circlelabel.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
7) PRINTABLES - </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i>Water Bottle Labels</i> - Here is a <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/8svre0pbcdndutp/spa%20labels.pdf?dl=0" target="_blank">link to the label above PDF</a> here or <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/j8t0k6dgc0lorss/spa%20labels.docx?dl=0" target="_blank">WORD document here</a> if you prefer. These labels are 1.25" x 8." We used Kirkland brand water bottles from Costco (the SMALL 8 oz bottles) and removed the labels from them (don't remove the sticky glue from the bottles when removing labels!). The new labels were stuck to the old glue and then wrapped around and glued with a simple glue stick (you could use any glue but a glue stick totally worked!!). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i>Round Stickers</i> for nut cups or napkins or whatever - <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/mimhoxh0r3krru2/spa%20circle%20labels.pdf?dl=0" target="_blank">Here is a link to the PDF</a> and <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/keg8uwcu5m7d794/spa%20circle%20labels.doc?dl=0" target="_blank">here is the link to the Word document</a>. (We used Avery 8293 round labels - which we had lying around)</div>

<a href="http://www.iheartnaptime.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/tree1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.iheartnaptime.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/tree1.png" height="320" width="228" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm not sure if I originally saw this idea <a href="http://www.iheartnaptime.net/diy-giving-tree/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Iheartnaptime1+%28I+%7Bheart%7D+Nap+Time+RSS+Post%29" target="_blank">HERE</a> or not, but we did this at Girl's Camp a few years ago. We bought a paper punch <a href="http://amzn.to/1IszZxa" target="_blank">LIKE THIS ONE</a> and punched <a href="http://amzn.to/1XBcF7t" target="_blank">CUTE PAPER</a> to make our ornaments. We used a <a href="http://amzn.to/1IsA7wG" target="_blank">PAPER PUNCH</a> to put holes for <a href="http://amzn.to/1IsAcRe" target="_blank">RIBBON</a> and made these cute ornaments. When the YW would perform service at camp, they would write their service on one of the ornaments and hang it on our tree. They worked really hard to get our tree decorated!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We used a <a href="http://amzn.to/1IszZxa" target="_blank">large punch</a> and actually decorated a tree outside. If you have good weather, this works well! Our <a href="http://amzn.to/1XBd4H6" target="_blank">ribbons</a> were the value colors!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This would also work really well at Christmas time to decorate a Christmas Tree!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
*This could be adapted for a Value Project idea!!</div>

<br />
Super cute and simple craft for the YW to do. They can make these for their own homes or as a service to deliver to ladies in the ward or even as a fund raiser! This is really only cost effective if you get the canning bands donated or find a super deal on them at a thrift store, etc.<br />
<br />
I found this idea <a href="http://www.funhomethings.com/2012/10/canning-lid-pumpkin.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>. To make these pumpkins, you simply paint the canning bands, string them together and add cinnamon sticks in the middle.<br />
<br />
*You can get 3lb of cinnamon sticks on Amazon relatively inexpensively. <a href="http://amzn.to/1IsAF5I" target="_blank">Click HERE to see/purchase</a>.<br />
<br />

In re-reading the <a href="http://lds.mycityport.com/other/blogs/CampGuide.pdf" target="_blank">YW Camp Guide</a>, I noticed that it says this about selecting a theme:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
A theme provides a focus for camp. A theme may be:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>A scripture</li>
<li>A statement from a prophet</li>
<li>A hymn</li>
<li>The Young Women theme or the current Mutual theme</li>
</ul>
<div>
Even though I think it's important to have FUN at camp, I am committed to have a spiritual theme. We'll be using the current mutual theme, "Arise and Shine Forth." I believe this theme can be both fun and spiritual!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also want to have activities to celebrate Young Women Camp's 100th birthday! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What are you using for your theme? What are your ideas for celebrating the 100th birthday of camp? <a href="https://www.lds.org/youth/article/young-women-camp?lang=eng" target="_blank">Here's a list of ideas from lds.org</a>!</div>

Our ward YW leaders planned a great New Beginnings program this year. It was casual dress and we were asked to bring camping chairs. When we got there, there was a fake fire going in the middle of the room. The girls all sat on the floor and the parents sat in their camp chairs.<br />
<br />
They handed out the camp songbook our stake made, and we sang the opening hymn from it. After the opening song, prayer, and announcement of the program, a couple seasoned girls campers led a couple of the fun camp songs. We sang a camp song or two between each segment of the program. <br />

To encourage excitement about camp, they had girls talk about camp and adventure camp after the talks on personal progress and the YW program. I don't remember ever being at New Beginnings where camp was presented like this! The whole program was fun and very memorable. It was also a great way to get the new girls excited about YW, and the older girls were a great example of how fun YW can be! (The cake pictured was NOT what our refreshments were, I just found it and thought it was adorable!)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361374222525032681.post-14565850300363456032012-02-23T11:05:00.000-07:002015-11-29T15:58:33.995-07:00Two Words: Waffle Party!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Who doesn't love waffles? That was the question my Laurel class had for me when they planned this activity. Their idea was to have a waffle night and invite the Priests.<br />
<br />
Assignments were made: waffle irons, waffle batter (6 types!) and toppings (fruit, syrups, whipped cream, etc.) and the party was held.<br />
<br />
This was a great activity for socializing. The youth had a good time making different flavors of waffles and just enjoying one another. They played a couple of games and had a fun time. For the waffles, we did "normal" waffle batter and then several flavors of cake batter waffles. To make cake batter waffles, just combine cake mix (ANY flavor - we used fudge, strawberry chip, red velvet, yellow cake - and more) with 3 eggs, 1/3 C oil & 1 1/3 C water.<br />
<br />
I purchased <a href="http://amzn.to/1NCD19X" target="_blank">disposable containers like these to make the batter in</a>. This worked well because when it was over I just put lids on the batter and sent them home with the young women!Whithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08433021981669593390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361374222525032681.post-75316713007827237372012-02-16T14:12:00.000-07:002012-02-16T14:12:40.981-07:00Personal Progress Bookmark<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.lds.org/featuredreading/images/features_photo_34819.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.lds.org/featuredreading/images/features_photo_34819.jpg" /></a></div>We have <a href="http://lds.mycityport.com/other/blogs/perprobookmark.pdf">created a bookmark</a> (left-click to open, right-click to save) for you to give to your YW. Here are a few songs from LDS.org that go along with this year's theme. You may want to select one to practice with your YW during Opening Exercises. After a few months they could sing it as a special number in Sacrament Meeting! You can see some other songs listed on the right side of this page.<br />

You can get it in <a href="https://lds.org/bc/content/shared/content/english/pdf/youth/SOY%20Orange%20Logo.pdf">Orange</a>, <a href="https://lds.org/bc/content/shared/content/english/pdf/youth/SOY%20Yellow%20Logo.pdf">Yellow </a>or <a href="https://lds.org/bc/content/shared/content/english/pdf/youth/SOY%20Blue%20Logo.pdf">Blue</a>! (right-click on the colors to save them to your computer now)<br />
<br />
The file is a .pdf file, but if you import it into Photoshop you can select the exact size you want it to be and then create t-shirts or whatever you choose! You can do this easily in Photoshop or any other photo editor that allows the import of .pdf files.<br />
<br />
I took it into Photoshop and resized it to upload to this blog. I also took off the "youth.lds.org" just because I'm not sure I want that on whatever I decide to make for the YW.<br />
<br />
I really like the idea of a pillow!Whithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08433021981669593390noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361374222525032681.post-78159925596802460822011-12-05T10:08:00.001-07:002012-02-16T14:14:53.428-07:00Combined YW/RS skills contest<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fitnesssource.ca/catalog/products/zm/Energetics_jump_ropes-zm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://www.fitnesssource.ca/catalog/products/zm/Energetics_jump_ropes-zm.jpg" width="175" /></a></div>Our Y.W. and R.S. had a joint meeting where they discussed the "necessities" of what all girls should know: cleaning, sewing/mending, etc. Then we had skills contests like: sewing on a button, setting a formal table setting, adding a contact in a cell phone, jumping rope, peeling potatoes, ironing a shirt, finding information on the internet, sorting cooking measures, and folding laundry.<br />
<br />
They divided into teams for nearly equal R.S. and Y.W. in each group. There were tables set up around the gym, and you had 5 minutes at each station, with 2-3 contests during that time. It was a Y.W. vs. R.S. lady. The person manning each station kept score. When each group had made it around the gym, they totaled the scores to see who won each skill! <br />

It was fun to get to have girls of all ages having fun together in friendly competition. It was fun to go up against a beehive while jumping rope and facing off against a Laurel to search the internet for which new temples were announced in Oct. conference.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361374222525032681.post-31513808268361848062011-08-31T09:50:00.000-06:002011-08-31T09:50:45.273-06:00General Conference Value Project - It's that time of year again!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4PYT7fSoZG4/SpGE0JRPIQI/AAAAAAAAAbk/t5X6Ph8Qk0M/s400/DSC02058edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4PYT7fSoZG4/SpGE0JRPIQI/AAAAAAAAAbk/t5X6Ph8Qk0M/s200/DSC02058edit.jpg" width="150" /></a></div><br />

General Conference is coming before we know it and so I thought I'd remind us all about <a href="http://whatwedidinmutual.blogspot.com/2011/05/general-conference-value-project.html">this awesome Value Project</a>. It would be a good time to remind the YW to finish up their Value Experiences in Knowledge so they can work on this Project. Also, I just found <a href="http://sistersstuff.blogspot.com/2009/08/altered-purse-notebook.html">this adorable craft</a> that would go along great with this project.Whithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08433021981669593390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361374222525032681.post-89596699251071621552011-08-24T08:00:00.048-06:002011-08-24T10:16:44.691-06:00Personal Progress Incentive<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW5k0PjRKwUsnalLtCC-a_yiCX9ksLtFQrWqzjTXqgccLvOUBGBFGnCL5adZuE_AqavZOMrM15pQiJKVVhJaHQMo46M_74RYASg3oum5NsbKA-m-Vl61IMqrI8ZuPZdCsroUl8mRLMylRu/s400/plastic+gems.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW5k0PjRKwUsnalLtCC-a_yiCX9ksLtFQrWqzjTXqgccLvOUBGBFGnCL5adZuE_AqavZOMrM15pQiJKVVhJaHQMo46M_74RYASg3oum5NsbKA-m-Vl61IMqrI8ZuPZdCsroUl8mRLMylRu/s200/plastic+gems.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>We keep a small vase (you can use a jar of any kind) and a baggie of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Century-Novelty-Assorted-Pirate-Mini/dp/B0046O1DTI?ie=UTF8&tag=widgetsamazon-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969">little plastic "gems"</a> on our table every Sunday and every Tuesday. Right before the prayer, we have the girls add whatever "beads" they've earned since the last time.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul><li>2 beads for bringing their books every Sunday and Tuesday.</li>
<li>5 beads for every experience they finish.</li>
<li>20 beads for each 10-hr project they complete.</li>
</ul>Our reasoning behind giving them beads just for bringing their books, is because 1st - they have them when we need them for parts of lessons, etc. and 2nd - if they KNOW where their book is and have looked at it recently, it's seriously half the battle of getting things accomplished. Plus everyone has theirs in hand and they see each other getting things signed off and they see all the highlighted areas in the other girls' books and it motivates them.<br />
<br />
When the vase is full we have a <b>Personal Progress Pizza Pigout Party</b> (5p party), where they all wear their PJ's and bring a treat the starts with "P". We provide 2 $5 pizzas and just play games and enjoy each other. The wonderful part about this activity is that it gives us leaders a chance to bring each girl into the other room for a quiet 5-8 minute interview and copy all of their progress into our tracking sheets and really chat with each girl about school, friends, home-life, etc. They think it's all about fun, and we get our PP interviews done. It's perfect. This happens about twice each year! You may have to play with the size of the jar and the size of the beads to make sure they get rewarded often enough, but not too often. Twice or three times a year works really well for us.<br />
